The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking an outstanding and proactive Research Impact and Engagement Manager to lead the development and implementation of the Department’s knowledge exchange and engagement strategy. Ranked 1st in Europe and 3rd in the world, the Department hosts a vibrant research community of 32 principal investigators, 50 research staff, and 150 postgraduate students. Delivering a high-quality research support service that adapts to the changing funding landscape is crucial to our strategy, underpinning our vital funding streams and research excellence.
Reporting to the Deputy Head of Department (Research), you will work in close partnership with academics, external professional service teams, and businesses to maximise research impact and develop strategic partnerships with industry and learned societies. Internally you will liaise with the grant support, finance, communications, and postgraduate education teams. You will play a vital role in identifying new industry partners, supporting the translation of research outputs into commercial propositions, and providing contractual, commercial, and intellectual property management advice. Additionally, you will establish an industrial engagement strategy for our Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and other postgraduate initiatives, supporting a new industrial student support network to benefit our students.
An essential aspect of the role is networking and external liaison. You will represent the Department within the School of Technology/School of Physical Sciences Impact Hub, collaborating with Knowledge Transfer Facilitators and broader University teams. You will also liaise with regional and national organisations across the Cambridge Cluster and Knowledge Transfer Networks to bridge connections between businesses and academics. Working proactively and with a high level of independence, you will provide strategic guidance, deliver training workshops to the academic community, and produce critical impact case studies and reports for institutional steering groups. National and international travel will occasionally be required to cultivate these relationships.
You will hold a degree or equivalent qualification/experience in an engineering, mathematical, or science discipline (a PhD is desirable). You must bring demonstrated experience liaising with senior staff across academia and industry, managing projects, and preparing collaborative research proposals. This role requires outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to successfully engage with diverse stakeholders, strong analytical and numeracy skills, and a proven track record in contract development or research grant administration.
