Role Description
The Department of Mathematics at the University of York is a vibrant community of over 50 academic staff and a flourishing cohort of postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars. We pride ourselves on a research environment that is both world-leading and deeply collaborative, consistently ranking among the top mathematics departments in the United Kingdom for research impact and excellence, and serving as a hub for many funded networks. As a research-led department, our high-calibre staff produce innovative and technically demanding research on a world stage spanning areas in pure, applied mathematics and statistics. All of our research was rated world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in REF2021 in all three categories: outputs, impact and environment. Only two other departments in the UK achieved this. This focus on high-level research is matched by our commitment to students; the University of York holds a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), recognising the high standard of our undergraduate and postgraduate education.
The Department encompasses a diverse spectrum of research across applied mathematics, statistics, and pure mathematics. Our Pure Mathematics section is renowned for its depth and breadth, boasting international reputations in several core disciplines. We have particular research strengths in Algebra, Number Theory, Analysis and Geometry.
Role
The role advertised is a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics (Grade 7) and is equivalent to the role of Assistant Professor at other institutions.
As a lecturer, you will lead an independent research programme that complements the existing strengths of the Pure Mathematics section whilst delivering high-quality teaching. You will be expected to secure research funding, publish in leading journals, and contribute actively to our undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Beyond the classroom, you will play an active role in the academic community through student supervision and departmental service.
