The role
The School of Education is seeking to appoint a capable and organised colleague to contribute to our work in Mathematics Education on a fixed-term contract, 1 September 2026 – 31 July 2027.
You will join an established teaching team and contribute to the teaching of the Post Graduate Certificate in Education in the Mathematics course. This includes the personal tutoring of student teachers across the year.
As well as enabling student teachers to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through school-based practice, the PGCE provides students with a theoretical grounding in Mathematics Education that draws on a rich range of perspectives. The programme promotes criticality, and reflective practice as a means of developing confident, creative and highly competent secondary (11-18) teachers. The successful candidate You will show the desire and capacity to play a full and active part in the life of the School.
Hybrid working is available but needs to be agreed. You are required to be available for in person teaching.
What will you be doing?
You should apply if
You have a good Honours degree in Mathematics, or closely related degree, and a PGCE (or equivalent) in secondary education.
You will need to have a full driving licence to accommodate visiting students at their placement schools.
You will have excellent subject knowledge in an academic discipline relevant to mathematics; in-depth knowledge of the secondary mathematics curriculum; a sound understanding of some scholarly literature and contemporary debates relating to mathematics education; a commitment to research-led teaching; a good understanding of current practice of secondary mathematics education in England; experience of teaching mathematics in secondary schools and/or Further/Higher Education.
Ideally, you will also have a master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, though this is not essential. It would also be desirable to have successful experience of initial teacher education in Mathematics, school-based mentoring of students or mentoring trainee teachers/ECTs; in-depth understanding of particular areas of scholarship and practice of secondary Mathematics education in the UK; and experience of scholarly activity related to initial teacher education.
